summary

Every breath rests on the open hand of a God whose glory endures forever.

lyrics

O Lord, how manifold are Your works!
In wisdom You have made them all;
The earth is full of Your riches.
So is this great and wide sea,
In which are innumerable creeping things,
Living creatures both small and great.
There go the ships,
And there is Leviathan,
Which You made to play therein.
These all wait upon You,
That You may give them their food in due season.
What You give them they gather;
You open Your hand, they are filled with good.
You hide Your face, they are troubled;
You take away their breath, they die
And return to their dust.
You send forth Your Spirit, they are created;
And You renew the face of the earth.

The glory of the Lord shall endure forever;
The Lord shall rejoice in His works.
He looks on the earth, and it trembles;
He touches the hills, and they smoke.
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
May my meditation of Him be sweet;
I will be glad in the Lord.
Let sinners be consumed from the earth,
And let the wicked be no more.
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
Praise the Lord!

Psalm 104B: The Lord Shall Endure Forever

When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.

What's Going On…

You can carry a low-grade unease about how dependent you are. You like the picture of yourself as competent, self-sustaining, mostly in control. But somewhere underneath you know that breath is a daily gift, that food shows up because of a chain you do not run, that nothing about you was self-made. You do not need the illusion of independence. You need the relief of being one of His creatures — fed, watered, sustained — and learning to live that way honestly.

What It Means

The middle of this prayer turns the camera on the whole created order: "O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all; the earth is full of Your riches. So is this great and wide sea, in which are innumerable creeping things, living creatures both small and great." Even Leviathan, the unimaginable sea creature, was made "to play therein." The biggest things in creation are His pets. Then comes the line that names the dependence underneath every breathing thing: "These all wait upon You, that You may give them their food in due season. What You give them they gather; You open Your hand, they are filled with good. You hide Your face, they are troubled; You take away their breath, they die and return to their dust." Open hand, filled. Hidden face, troubled. Spirit removed, dust again. You are in that line. So is everything that has ever lived. But the next line lifts: "You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; and You renew the face of the earth." He is not only Sustainer — He is Renewer. The same God who feeds keeps re-creating. The personal close is firm: "I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. May my meditation of Him be sweet; I will be glad in the Lord." Dependence does not embarrass the writer. It shapes his praise.

Right Here, Right Now

• Right now, take one slow breath in and out — and as you exhale, say: "You sustain me, and I am one of the ones waiting on Your hand." • Write this down: "Where have I been pretending to be self-sufficient to avoid the relief of dependence?" • Repeat this line when the urge to control rises: "You open Your hand; they are filled with good."

Selah

Stop. Breathe. Let every breath name itself as a gift before you take the next one. Then tell Him exactly what you want to wait on Him for — out loud if you can.

Prayer

God, the earth is full of Your riches, and I am one of the small creatures You sustain. You open Your hand and we are filled; You hide Your face and we are troubled. I do not want to keep acting like I run my own life when dependence is the truth underneath it. Send forth Your Spirit again and renew what feels worn down in me and around me. I will sing praise to You as long as I live, because meditating on You is sweet and Your endurance is the only thing under my whole life. You're still my Shepherd.

Stay Strong

Every breath rests on the open hand of a God whose glory endures forever.
