summary

You belong to a covenant He has been keeping for a thousand generations.

lyrics

O give thanks to the Lord; call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples.
Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him;
Talk of all His wondrous works.
Glory in His holy name;
Let the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face evermore.
Remember His marvelous works that He has done,
His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth—
O seed of Abraham His servant,
You children of Jacob His chosen.

He is the Lord our God;
His judgments are in all the earth.
He has remembered His covenant forever,
The word He commanded to a thousand generations—
The covenant He made with Abraham,
And His oath to Isaac,
And confirmed it to Jacob as a law,
To Israel as an everlasting covenant,
Saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
As the portion of your inheritance.”
When they were few in number—
Very few, and strangers in it—
When they wandered from nation to nation,
From one kingdom to another people,
He permitted no one to oppress them;
He even reproved kings for their sakes,
Saying, “Do not touch My anointed ones,
And do My prophets no harm.”

Psalm 105A: O Give Thanks

When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.

What's Going On…

You can feel like the story you are inside started this morning. You forget how long the line of faithfulness behind you is — that the same God who holds you today held people centuries before you, in lands you will never see, with promises that did not break. You are part of a long faithfulness God has been keeping for generations, and you can call on His name with the same confidence the people before you did.

What It Means

This one starts with thanksgiving as instruction: "O give thanks to the Lord; call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples. Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; talk of all His wondrous works." Thanksgiving here is a public, vocal, repeated practice. Then the call narrows: "Glory in His holy name; let the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face evermore. Remember His marvelous works that He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth." Then comes the long memory: "He has remembered His covenant forever, the word He commanded to a thousand generations — the covenant He made with Abraham, and His oath to Isaac, and confirmed it to Jacob as a law, to Israel as an everlasting covenant." Three names, one promise, generations of holding. The closing window into how He cared for them: "When they were few in number — very few, and strangers in it — when they wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another people, He permitted no one to oppress them; He even reproved kings for their sakes, saying, 'Do not touch My anointed ones, and do My prophets no harm.'" When His people were small and exposed, He reproved kings on their behalf. He has been doing that for a long time.

Right Here, Right Now

• Right now, name out loud one specific person before you whose faithfulness made room for yours — and thank God for the chain that included you. • Write this down: "Where have I been living like my story started this morning instead of being part of a thousand-generation covenant?" • Repeat this line when you feel small: "He even reproved kings for their sakes."

Selah

Stop. Breathe. Let the line of faithfulness behind you stretch back further than this morning. Then tell Him exactly what you want to give thanks for — out loud if you can.

Prayer

God, You have remembered Your covenant for a thousand generations, and I am one of the people inside that line. Forgive me for living like the story started with me. Make my mouth honest about what You have done, so the next person hears what You did for the ones before me. Turn Your face toward me — I am calling on Your name and looking for Your strength. Reprove kings on my behalf where I am small and exposed, the way You always have for Your own. You're still my Shepherd.

Stay Strong

You belong to a covenant He has been keeping for a thousand generations.
