The presence that melts mountains still sows light for the righteous.

lyrics

The Lord reigns;
Let the earth rejoice;
Let the multitude of coastlands be glad.
Clouds and thick darkness surround Him;
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
Fire goes before Him
And burns up His adversaries round about.

His lightnings light up the world;
The earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax
At the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the Lord of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim His righteousness,
And all the peoples see His glory.

Confounded be all who serve carved images,
Who boast in worthless idols;
Worship Him, all you gods.
Zion hears and is glad;
The daughters of Judah rejoice
Because of Your judgments, O Lord.
For You, Lord, are most high above all the earth;
You are exalted far above all gods.

You who love the Lord, hate evil;
He preserves the souls of His saints;
He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Light is sown for the righteous,
And gladness for the upright in heart.
Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous,
And give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.

Psalm 97: His Presence

When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.

What's Going On…

You can spend a long stretch wishing God's presence felt more dramatic — wishing you could see something undeniable, hear something audible, feel something that would settle the question once and for all. You are tired of subtlety in a stretch that needs weight. Then a different question arises: when His presence does come close, would your heart actually be ready for it? Real holiness is not always comfortable. The mountains melted.

What It Means

This passage does not reduce God's presence to a nice feeling. "The Lord reigns; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of coastlands be glad. Clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne." Joy and gravity in the same line. He is gladness, and He is also surrounded by what cannot be casually approached. Then the imagery gets intense: "Fire goes before Him and burns up His adversaries round about. His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord." That is theophany — God making Himself felt. And the response is "the heavens proclaim His righteousness, and all the peoples see His glory." Idols look small fast: "Confounded be all who serve carved images, who boast in worthless idols." Then the line that turns it into instruction: "You who love the Lord, hate evil; He preserves the souls of His saints." Loving Him changes what you tolerate in yourself. The close lands gentle: "Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart." And what holds it all in place: "For You, Lord, are high above all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods." Height with mercy in it — He is above every false rival, and the gladness still comes down to the upright.

Right Here, Right Now

• Right now, say out loud: "righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne" — and let it interrupt whatever lighter version of God you have been imagining. • Write this down: "What worthless idol have I been quietly serving while saying I love the Lord?" • Repeat this line when His presence feels distant: "Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart."

Selah

Stop. Breathe. Picture mountains melting under His weight and light sown for the upright, then tell Him exactly where you need His presence to come close — out loud if you can.

Prayer

God, You reign — and the foundation of Your throne is righteousness and justice, not the softer version I keep imagining. I have been wishing for a presence that costs me nothing to be near. Burn up what cannot stand in front of You, including the worthless idols I keep close. Teach me to love You enough to hate what You hate, without becoming hard or proud. Sow light in me for the road ahead, and gladness for a heart that wants to be upright. You're still my Shepherd.

Stay Strong

The presence that melts mountains still sows light for the righteous.
