Psalm 117: Praise Him
When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.
What's Going On…
You can over-complicate praise. You think it requires the right words, the right setting, the right mood. But there are days when the shortest possible declaration is the most honest one — and you do not need any more words than what is already true.
You do not need a longer prayer. Sometimes the prayer is two lines, said by every person in every nation: His mercy is great. His truth endures.
What It Means
This is the shortest passage in the whole Book — and the simplicity is the point. "Oh praise the Lord, oh praise the Lord, all nations; praise Him all you people. For His merciful kindness is great toward us, and the truth of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord." That is the entire prayer. Two reasons, one command, repeated.
The reasons are not small: "His merciful kindness is great toward us, and the truth of the Lord endures forever." Mercy that is great. Truth that endures. Those two together cover everything. He is kind, and His word does not move. The command is for "all nations" and "all you people." Praise here is universal — every street, every language, every story, the same call.
When you cannot find the right words for prayer, you do not have to. The shortest prayer in Scripture is also the most universal. Mercy is great toward you. Truth endures. Now praise. Notice the math — two verses to hold the call for every nation, because it is dense. Two pillars, one command. The people called in are "all nations" and "all people" — every accent, every voice, every history. The prayer is small because the shoulders carrying it are wide. Brief is full here.
Right Here, Right Now
• Right now, say the whole prayer out loud — even with one line: "His merciful kindness is great toward me, and His truth endures forever. Praise the Lord."
• Write this down: "What overcomplicated prayer life have I been performing instead of saying the simple truth?"
• Repeat this line when prayer feels heavy: "His mercy is great. His truth endures. Praise the Lord."
Selah
Stop. Breathe. Let the smallest possible prayer become enough for one minute. Then tell Him what is most true about Him today — out loud if you can.
Prayer
God, Your merciful kindness is great toward me, and Your truth endures forever.
That is the whole prayer some days, and it is enough.
Forgive me for treating short praise as if it had to be longer to count.
Pull me into the chorus that includes all nations and all peoples, because praise was never meant to be regional.
Let what I say with my mouth be true, even when it is brief.
You're still my Shepherd.
