What you trust shapes what you become — so trust the God in the heavens.

lyrics

Not to us, O Lord, not to us,
But to Your name give glory,
For Your mercy and Your truth’s sake.
Why should the nations say,
“Where is now their God?”
But our God is in the heavens;
He does whatever He pleases.

Their idols are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
They have ears, but they do not hear;
Noses they have, but they do not smell.
They have hands, but they do not handle;
Feet they have, but they do not walk;
Nor do they mutter through their throat.
Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.

O Israel, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield.
The Lord has been mindful of us;
He will bless us;
He will bless the house of Israel;
He will bless the house of Aaron.
He will bless those who fear the Lord,
Both small and great.

May the Lord increase you more and more,
You and your children.
You are blessed of the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.
The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s,
But the earth He has given to the children of men.
The dead do not praise the Lord,
Nor any who go down into silence.
But we will bless the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore.
Praise the Lord!

Psalm 115: Our God

When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.

What's Going On…

You can spend a lot of energy curating a reputation, working a narrative, building a version of yourself to be seen — and feel quietly hollow when it lands. You are noticing that even the credit you do deserve does not satisfy the way you thought it would. You do not need a louder name. You need to live inside the prayer that says, "Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory" — and find out that gives you more rest than visibility ever did.

What It Means

This prayer opens with the line that should reset every glory-grab: "Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your name give glory, for Your mercy and Your truth's sake." That is the right ordering of reality. The glory was not yours to keep. Then it confronts the question others ask: "Why should the nations say, 'Where is now their God?' But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases." Their idols are visible, manageable, near. Our God is in the heavens, doing whatever He pleases. Then the brutal idol critique: "Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; eyes they have, but they do not see; they have ears, but they do not hear; noses they have, but they do not smell..." The list goes on. Idols look impressive, but they cannot do anything. And the line that hits hard: "Those who make them are like them; so is everyone who trusts in them." You become what you trust. Trust dead things, become dead inside. The call that follows is repeated three times: "O Israel, trust in the Lord; he is their help and their shield. O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord... You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord." Three calls, one prescription. Trust in the Lord. He has been mindful of us; He will bless us — both small and great. The close stays true to the opening: "But we will bless the Lord from this time forth and forevermore. Praise the Lord!"

Right Here, Right Now

• Right now, pray out loud the opening line, and mean it: "Not to me, O Lord, not to me, but to Your name give glory." • Write this down: "Whose glory has my heart been quietly trying to grab — and what idol have I been becoming like by trusting it?" • Repeat this line when the glory-grab rises: "Our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases."

Selah

Stop. Breathe. Let the difference between idols you can see and a God who is in the heavens land. Then tell Him exactly where you need the credit redirected — out loud if you can.

Prayer

God, not to me, not to me, but to Your name give glory. You have been mindful of me, and You will bless me — both small parts and great. Forgive me for the energy I have spent building visible idols out of reputation, image, and influence. You become what you trust, and I do not want to become like the dead things I keep grabbing for. Let my whole life say it back to You: You are in the heavens, and You do whatever You please. You're still my Shepherd.

Stay Strong

What you trust shapes what you become — so trust the God in the heavens.
