Distance is not the last word — the King who sees you still is.

lyrics

Why, O Lord, do You stand far off?
Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble?

In his pride the wicked persecutes the poor
Let them be caught in the schemes they have imagined
The wicked boasts of his heart’s desire
He blesses the greedy—those the Lord abhors

Through the pride of his face, the wicked will not seek God
God is not in any of his thoughts
His ways are always twisted
Your judgments are far above, out of his sight
He sneers at all his enemies

He says in his heart, “I shall not be moved
I will never face adversity”
His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and fraud
Under his tongue is mischief and lies

He lurks in the villages’ hidden places
In secret he murders the innocent
His eyes are secretly fixed on the poor
He lies in wait like a lion in his den

He lies in wait to catch the poor
He draws them into his net
He crouches low, he humbles himself
That the poor may fall by his strength

He says in his heart, “God has forgotten
He hides His face, He will never see it”

Arise, O Lord—O God, lift up Your hand
Do not forget the humble
Why does the wicked despise God?
He says in his heart, “You will not call him to account”

But You have seen it
You behold the mischief and the spite
To repay it with Your hand
The poor commits himself to You
You are the helper of the fatherless

Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man
Seek out his wickedness until nothing remains
The Lord is King forever and ever
The nations have perished from His land

Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble
You will prepare their heart
You will cause Your ear to hear
To do justice for the fatherless and the oppressed
That the man of the earth may oppress no more

Psalm 10: Why Do You Stand Far Off

When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.

What's Going On…

Trouble hits and heaven feels quiet. You look up and wonder where God went — not because you stopped believing, but because pain is loud and His presence feels thin. Maybe you are the one being pushed around. Maybe you are watching someone else get targeted while the person doing harm looks untouchable. Either way, the same question shows up: Why does it look like He is not looking? This one does not rush past that question. It lets you say it out loud before it tells you what to feel. It names how predatory pride works, then turns and insists God has been paying attention the whole time.

What It Means

It opens with the hardest lines first: "Why, O Lord, do You stand far off? Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble?" That is not disrespect. It is grief talking straight. This one refuses to fake peace when your experience says different. Then it describes the wicked in detail — boasting, lying, sneering, hunting the poor, whispering that God will not notice. That part is not pretty, but it matters. Evil often believes it is untouchable. This one puts that lie on the table so you can see it clearly. The prayer pivots. "Arise, O Lord — O God, lift up Your hand. Do not forget the humble." And then the turn that changes everything: "But You have seen it… You are the helper of the fatherless." God is still King. He hears the desire of the humble. The closing line is quiet but heavy: "You will strengthen their heart; You will incline Your ear to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more." Strike terror no more. That is not sentimental. That is promised. The story ends with justice for the oppressed — not a fantasy that hurt never happened, but a promise that oppression does not get the last word.

Right Here, Right Now

• Say verse 1 out loud right now — as honest prayer, not performance — even if the words feel sharp. • Write this down: "Where do I feel like God is far — and what would it look like to tell Him that without editing?" • Repeat this line when you feel invisible or outnumbered: "But You have seen it."

Selah

Let the hard question breathe — why it feels like He is far — then tell Him, in your own words, what you need Him to see. Out loud if you can.

Prayer

God, it feels like You are standing far off, and I hate that feeling. I see pride winning in places that should not win, and it makes my stomach turn. Do not forget the humble — do not forget me when I feel small. You say You have seen it. Help me believe that on the days when I cannot see You moving. Be the helper of the fatherless, the defender of the crushed — be my help too. You're still my Shepherd.

Stay Strong

Distance is not the last word — the King who sees you still is.
