Silence is not absence — He is still the Most High over all the earth.

lyrics

Keep not silence, O God;
Hold not Your peace, be not still, O God.
For behold, Your enemies make a tumult;
Those who hate You lift up their heads.
They take crafty counsel against Your people
And consult against Your hidden ones.
They have said, “Come, let us cut them off from being a nation,
That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”

For they have conspired together with one consent;
They are confederate against You—
The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
Moab and the Hagrites,
Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek,
The Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;
Asshur also has joined them;
They have helped the children of Lot. Selah.

Do to them as You did to the Midianites,
As to Sisera, as to Jabin at the brook Kishon,
Who perished at Endor
And became like dung for the earth.
Make their nobles like Oreb and like Zeeb,
All their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna,
Who said, “Let us take possession for ourselves
Of the pastures of God.”

O my God, make them like whirling dust,
Like chaff before the wind.
As fire consumes the forest
And as flame sets the mountains ablaze,
So pursue them with Your tempest
And terrify them with Your storm.

Fill their faces with shame,
That they may seek Your name, O Lord.
Let them be confounded and dismayed forever;
Yes, let them be put to shame and perish,
That men may know that You,
Whose name alone is the Lord,
Are the Most High over all the earth.

Psalm 83: Please Move

When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.

What's Going On…

You can feel surrounded in a way that scares you. Not one threat — coordinated pressure. Different voices, different fronts, but the same shape underneath: a quiet plan to push you out, shrink your influence, end what God has been growing in you. The worst part is the silence on God's end. You keep asking, and the room stays still. You want Him to move. To say something. To do something visible that lets you know He has not gone far away while plans against you are already on the table.

What It Means

This cry begins with a triple plea that lays the whole emergency on God's doorstep: "Keep not silence, O God; hold not Your peace, be not still, O God." That is desperation that refuses to be polite. He names the conspiracy without flinching — enemies in tumult, crafty counsel, an alliance of nations plotting to "cut them off from being a nation." The prayer that follows is hard for modern ears, but it is honest: he asks God to break the alliance, to do to them what He did to past oppressors, to make them "like whirling dust, like chaff before the wind." This is appeal for divine intervention against a coordinated assault on God's people. The closing line is the clue to the whole prayer's heart: "Fill their faces with shame, that they may seek Your name, O Lord... that men may know that You, whose name alone is the Lord, are the Most High over all the earth." Even the cry for God to act against them ends in a prayer for them to know Him. He wants God's name vindicated more than his enemies destroyed. Silence from God is not the same as absence. The Most High over all the earth has not stepped down from the throne while you have been waiting on Him.

Right Here, Right Now

• Right now, name one coordinated pressure you have been facing, and pray plainly: "Please move, God — keep not silence." • Write this down: "Where has God's silence been making me question His nearness?" • Repeat this line when the room feels still: "Whose name alone is the Lord, the Most High over all the earth."

Selah

Stop. Breathe. Let the cry for God to move come up from underneath the polite version of your prayer, then tell Him exactly where you need Him to break the silence — out loud if you can.

Prayer

God, please move. I am tired of being polite about how surrounded I feel. You see the alliance of pressures, the words spoken in rooms I am not in, the plans already on someone's desk. Do not be still while what You have been growing is being plotted against. I am not asking out of revenge — I am asking because Your name is on this. Let what is hidden be exposed, and let those who plot find themselves seeking Your name instead. You're still my Shepherd.

Stay Strong

Silence is not absence — He is still the Most High over all the earth.
