lyrics

Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
Defend me from those who rise up against me.
Deliver me from the workers of iniquity,
And save me from bloody men.
For behold, they lie in wait for my soul;
The mighty gather against me—
Not for any transgression or sin of mine, O Lord.
They run and prepare themselves without cause:
Awake to help me, and behold.

You, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel,
Awake to punish all the nations;
Show no mercy to any wicked transgressors. Selah.

They return at evening;
They growl like dogs
And prowl around the city.
See how they belch out with their mouths—
Swords are in their lips:
“For who,” they say, “will hear?”
But You, O Lord, will laugh at them;
You will hold all the nations in derision.

Because of Your strength I will wait on You;
For God is my defense.
The God of my mercy will come to meet me;
God will let me see my desire upon my enemies.

Do not slay them, lest my people forget;
Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down,
O Lord our shield.
For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips,
Let them be caught in their pride;
For the cursing and lying which they speak.
Consume them in wrath, consume them until they are no more,
That they may know that God rules in Jacob
To the ends of the earth. Selah.

And at evening let them return;
Let them growl like dogs
And prowl around the city.
Let them wander up and down for food,
And growl if they are not satisfied.

But I will sing of Your power;
Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning,
For You have been my defense
And my refuge in the day of my trouble.
To You, O my Strength, will I sing;
For God is my defense,
The God of my mercy.

Psalm 59: Deliver Me from My Enemies

When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.

What's Going On…

Some days feel like you are being hunted by conflict you did not start. People twist words, circle back with the same attacks, and keep showing up in your mental space even when you are trying to move on. It is exhausting to stay calm when pressure keeps returning at night. You are tired of feeling unsafe in your own thoughts. You need protection and strength to wait without hardening.

What It Means

This one opens with direct urgency: "Deliver me... defend me... save me." He names enemies lying in wait and insists the attack is without just cause. That honesty matters when you feel falsely targeted. He names the danger, and he names his anger. At the same time, he keeps re-centering on God: "Because of Your strength I will wait on You, for God is my defense... the God of my mercy will come to meet me." The threat repeats, but trust repeats louder. The ending is a morning declaration because God remained refuge through the night: "I will sing of Your power... You have been my defense and refuge in the day of trouble." Two pictures cut through the prayer. The enemies are described circling: "they return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city." That is the relentless, low-growling kind of opposition that will not let your nervous system rest. And then God's response — "But You, O Lord, shall laugh at them; You shall have all the heathen in derision." The image is staggering: what feels like siege to him is laughable to God. Sovereign laughter. The closing repetition is no accident: "Unto You, O my strength, will I sing." Strength is named twice in this prayer because survival is found in remembering whose it actually is.

Right Here, Right Now

• Right now, bring one repeating conflict to God by name, and ask for defense in that situation. • Write this down: "Where has repeated pressure made me reactive instead of anchored?" • Repeat this line when anxiety returns: "Because of Your strength I will wait on You, for God is my defense."

Selah

Stop. Breathe. Let the returning noise lose volume in His presence, then tell Him exactly where you feel stalked by stress or opposition — out loud if you can.

Prayer

God, deliver me from what keeps rising against me. You see the words, the patterns, and the pressure that keep circling back. Defend me where I feel falsely accused and emotionally worn down. Keep me from reacting in pride, rage, or fear when the same fight shows up again. Be my strength while I wait, and teach me to sing of Your mercy in the morning. You're still my Shepherd.

Stay Strong

What keeps returning does not outrank the God who still defends you.
