lyrics

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
Praise Him in the heights.
Praise Him, all His angels;
Praise Him, all His hosts.
Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all you stars of light.
Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
And you waters that be above the heavens.
Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For He commanded, and they were created.
He has also established them forever and ever;
He has made a decree which shall not pass.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
You dragons and all deeps,
Fire and hail, snow and vapor,
Stormy wind fulfilling His word,
Mountains and all hills,
Fruitful trees and all cedars,
Beasts and all cattle,
Creeping things and flying fowl,
Kings of the earth and all people,
Princes and all judges of the earth,
Both young men and maidens,
Old men and children.

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
For His name alone is excellent;
His glory is above the earth and heaven.
He also exalts the horn of His people,
The praise of all His saints,
Even of the children of Israel,
A people near unto Him.
Praise the Lord!

Psalm 148: Praise Him

When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.

What's Going On…

You can wake up in a body that feels small inside a universe that feels indifferent — the news cycle is loud, your own life is a single dot in it, and praise feels like a disproportionate response when the world is on fire. The voice in your head says, "You are too small for this to matter." The voice in your heart is too tired to argue. You do not need to feel cosmically significant first. The angels, the stars, the deeps, the mountains, the cattle, and every old man and child are already praising — and the right move is to add your voice to a chorus already going without you.

What It Means

This is the cosmic call to worship. It moves from highest to lowest, sky to sidewalk. "Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the heights. Praise Him, all His angels; praise Him, sun and moon; praise Him, all you stars of light." Every glowing thing in the upper register is enlisted. The reason: "For He commanded, and they were created. He has made a decree which shall not pass." He spoke; they came. Then the call comes down to earth: "Praise the Lord from the earth, you dragons and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and vapor, stormy wind fulfilling His word." Even the wind that scares you is doing what He told it to. The storm fulfills His word. Then He walks the call further down: "Mountains and all hills... kings of the earth and all people... young men and maidens, old men and children." Royalty and the kid in the back have the same job. The close gives the reason: "His name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven. He also exalts the horn of His people... a people near unto Him." His name alone is excellent — and yet He pulls His people close. Cosmic and intimate in the same sentence.

Right Here, Right Now

• Right now, look out the nearest window or step outside if you can — name three things you see (sky, tree, sparrow, wind, person) and say out loud: "Praise the Lord, [each one], for He commanded, and you were created." • Write this down: "What part of creation around me have I been overlooking that has been praising Him without me?" • Repeat this line when your praise feels too small: "His name alone is excellent; His glory is above the earth and heaven."

Selah

Stop. Breathe. Let every angel, every star, every mountain, every storm, every beast and child already lifting praise widen the small praise you have been offering, then tell Him exactly which corner of His creation you want to add your voice to today — out loud if you can.

Prayer

God, praise You from the heavens, and praise You in the heights — and praise You from this small room I am sitting in, because that counts too. The angels, the hosts, the sun and moon and stars of light are already at it; let me not be the part of creation that is silent. You commanded, and they were created; You established them forever and ever, by a decree that shall not pass; the world is held together by what You have spoken. Even the stormy wind is fulfilling Your word — so when the storm is in my life, let me remember it is not loose. Your name alone is excellent, Your glory is above the earth and heaven — and yet You exalt the horn of Your people and call us a people near unto You; let me live near. You're still my Shepherd.

Stay Strong

Add your voice to the chorus — don't wait until you feel big enough.
