summary

The idols are silent — the One who does whatever He pleases has been speaking the whole time.

lyrics

Praise the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord;
Praise Him, O servants of the Lord.
You that stand in the house of the Lord,
In the courts of the house of our God,
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good;
Sing praises unto His name, for it is pleasant.
For the Lord has chosen Jacob unto Himself,
And Israel for His peculiar treasure.

For I know that the Lord is great,
And that our Lord is above all gods.
Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did He
In heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places.
He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth;
He makes lightnings for the rain;
He brings the wind out of His treasuries.
Who smote the firstborn of Egypt,
Both of man and beast.
Who sent tokens and wonders into the midst of you, O Egypt,
Upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants.

Who smote great nations,
And slew mighty kings—
Sihon king of the Amorites,
And Og king of Bashan,
And all the kingdoms of Canaan—
And gave their land for an heritage,
An heritage unto Israel His people.
Your name, O Lord, endures forever;
And Your memorial, O Lord, throughout all generations.
For the Lord will judge His people,
And He will have compassion on His servants.

The idols of the heathen are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but they speak not;
Eyes they have, but they see not;
They have ears, but they hear not;
Neither is there any breath in their mouths.
They that make them are like unto them;
So is every one that trusts in them.
Bless the Lord, O house of Israel;
Bless the Lord, O house of Aaron;
Bless the Lord, O house of Levi;
You that fear the Lord, bless the Lord.
Blessed be the Lord out of Zion,
Who dwells at Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!

Psalm 135: Your Name Endures Forever

When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.

What's Going On…

You can drift into a quiet kind of idolatry without ever bowing to a literal statue — letting the things you can see and hold (your account balance, your following, the people you keep refreshing for approval) speak louder to you than the God who actually answers. Your trust slips toward what is silver and gold without you ever deciding to move it there. You do not need a louder argument against your idols. You need to remember that they have mouths and do not speak, and that the One who chose Jacob for His peculiar treasure has been speaking the whole time.

What It Means

This is a praise call to people who already work in His house — "Praise Him, O servants of the Lord. You that stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God." The first listener is the insider. He is reminding the close ones not to drift while they are close. Then the foundation: "For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did He in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places." Whatever He pleased — that is the verb of an unrivaled God. Vapors ascend at His word, lightning splits at His command, wind comes out of His treasuries. He is running the weather. Then the receipts: He smote Egypt, brought Israel out, struck down Sihon and Og, gave their land for an inheritance. The history is the proof. Then the contrast: "The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes they have, but they see not... They that make them are like unto them; so is every one that trusts in them." That last line is the warning. We become like what we trust. Trust silent things long enough, and your own mouth goes quiet too.

Right Here, Right Now

• Right now, name one thing you have been refreshing or checking for life lately — and pray out loud: "It has a mouth but does not speak — You are God." • Write this down: "What 'silver and gold' have I been quietly trusting more than the God who actually does whatever He pleases?" • Repeat this line when the idol calls you back: "Whatsoever the Lord pleased, that did He in heaven, and in earth, in the seas, and all deep places."

Selah

Stop. Breathe. Let the size of the God who runs the wind out of His treasuries press your idols back into the inert objects they actually are, then tell Him exactly which one you want to walk away from — out loud if you can.

Prayer

God, You are great, and You are above all gods — and I am tired of bowing to things that cannot speak back. Forgive me for trusting what is silver and gold, what is the work of men's hands, what cannot see me. You chose Jacob for Yourself, Israel for Your peculiar treasure — treat me like I belong to that people again. Whatsoever You please, You do — in the heavens, on the earth, in the seas, in the deep places. There is no rival to that. Bless the Lord, O house of my heart; bless the Lord, everything in me that fears You. You're still my Shepherd.

Stay Strong

The idols are silent — the One who does whatever He pleases has been speaking the whole time.
