Light Arises in the Darkness

When you need to remember — that You're still my Shepherd.

You can be in a long stretch of darkness — not catastrophic, just sustained — and notice you have stopped expecting any light. You are managing. You are doing what needs to be done. But hope has gone quiet, and you cannot tell when the dimming started. What you want to remember is that for the upright, light arises inside the darkness. Inside the dark itself, something starts to shine. You do not have to wait for the room to clear to see it.

This passage is about the blessed life of the person who fears the Lord. "Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments." Delight is the verb — not duty. The blessed life is a delighted life. Then the catalog of the blessing: descendants mighty on earth, the upright generation blessed, wealth and riches in his house, righteousness that endures. But then comes the line that lights up the whole prayer: "Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; he is gracious, full of compassion, and righteous." Light arises in the darkness — present tense, ongoing. Not after, not eventually. In. Then the practical shape of that light: "A good man shows favor and lends; he guides his affairs with discretion. Surely he will never be shaken; the righteous will be in everlasting remembrance." The light shows up as discretion in his affairs and generosity to others. It is not just an inner glow — it is a visible way of living. Then the line about fear: "He will not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord." Fixed-hearted, evil-tidings-resistant. Not because nothing bad happens, but because his trust does not relocate when the news gets dark. The close is about generosity: "He has dispersed abroad, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn will be exalted with honor." A blessed life is a giving life. The light that arose in the darkness keeps moving outward.

Stop. Breathe. Let "there arises light in the darkness" apply to the place that has stopped expecting any. Then tell Him exactly where you need His light to arise — out loud if you can.

God, I am in a stretch of darkness where I have stopped expecting any light. Remind me that for the upright, light arises in the dark — not after it. Fix my heart so I am not afraid of evil tidings, and so my trust does not relocate when news gets bad. Make me generous with what I have, so the light that arises in me keeps moving outward to people who need it. Let righteousness endure in me longer than the stretch I am inside. You're still my Shepherd.
